Hello from Alaska.
I grew up in Columbia and graduated from CHS in 1978. I recieved my BS
from SIU and have been around the US since then. Recieved my MS from
Montana State University and PhD from the University of Georgia. I
recently moved to Alaska after leave a professorship in the middle
eastern country of Oman. During all my travels, Columbia has remained
home to me with my brother and sister with their respective families in
Columbia. I am giving you my e-mail address to post in hopes of
renewing old friendships.
And anyone wanting to know about the fishing in Alaska can drop a note.
Sincerely, Dr. Darryl J Byerley, PhD (djbrjb@alaska.net)
I just found your home page as I was browsing on the web today. I am a former resident of Monroe County having lived in Waterloo for most of my life. I am an avid historian of Monroe County and even though I live in the Kansas City area I still continue to collect and build my collection of local memorabilia. Recently I acquired some old soda bottles from the1800's from both Waterloo and Columbia. If any of your readers has information about the different soda manufacturers that were in Monroe county at one time I would greatly appreciate this. The names I am looking for are Henry Schuell, John Ruf, George DePuyt from Waterloo and John Gundlach and his son from Columbia. I also collect old picture postcards from the area and have approximately 300 from the early 1900's showing scenes of Monroe County. Anyway thank you for having this information available for both residents and former residents' use. It is much appreciated. R. Huetsch (RHuetsch.aol.com)
I just visited your Monroe County Home page and would like to tell you how
much I enjoyed reading all of the information you have posted. My reason for
going to the Monroe County Home Page was that my roots date back to Waterloo
in 1838. My great grandfather Amos Frederick Foster Gardner (1813-1884) &
his family traveled in the summer of 1838 from Washington Co., OH to
Waterloo; where they settled, bought land & farmed for many years. My
grandfather Charles Foster Gardner was born in Waterloo in 1875. Related
families to the Gardners in and around Waterloo were Hendrickson, Hormel,
Burroughs, Grantz, Neudecker, Sauthoff, Miller, Horine, Burke, Chandler, &
Drury. I am a family genealogist & would be happy to correspond with any
descendants of these families that still live in the area...Sue Gardner Shreve, 5 Anderson Court, Bay Shore, LI, NY 11706-7701 (SUE12632@aol.com)
I used to attend Flora Township High School (Flora, IL). I take the Daily Clay County Advocate Press. Saw your ad in the paper--think its great that you gave your WWW address. I live in Southern California, part of the LA basin. At least 60% of sour successful businesses in this basin use the WWW as part of their advertising.
I'm in the education business as a Professor of Accounting at a major college. My students use the WWW as part of their weekly assignments and are very comforltable with "cruising" and using the web for business services.
Anyway, enough rambling. Just wanted to pass this on...Jim Yates (Yates_J@sccd.cc.ca.us)
Thanks for the cyber-visit! My grandfather was a Shields (B. Elmer) born out on Bushy-Prairie Road in 1908, and a graduate (!) of Oak Grove School, now long-gone on the same road. It's been awhile since I've been back in person, but I have fond memories of Brookie's Tavern in Burksville Station (Mrs. Brookie's fried chicken), driving through the cree in Maeystown, visiting the family at Madonnaville Cemetery, and Elmer's farm just off Hwy. 3, about half-way between Tipton and KK. I believe the property is now owned by the Crook family. Anyway, I was snooping around for some information on Monroe County's "famous" Shields (James) Shields (l810-1879) who was born in Ireland, moved to Waterloo, nearly fought Abraham Lincoln in a duel, served as a representative from Illinois, was governor of the Oregon Territory, and also was serving as Senator from Missouri at his death in 1879. There weren't that many Shields in the county then, so I was wondering about information that might be on -line regarding, births, deaths, etc. Thanks again for the visit, and I'm sorry to cram your mailbox full of personal nonsense...Elizabeth Newton (newton@dynetics.com)
Hello. You provide an interesting array of local history. I would like to see events posted. Last event posted was for New Year. This is a great web site. My new address is lardeb@bpcbbs.com. Bye, Larry Davis (lardeb@bpcbbs.com)
I found your homepage (especially the Gedern section) with Yahoo. I'm proud that some people in the USA think about their German origin. You have a great homepage! At the moment I am working on my own personal homepage with a lot of pictures from Gedern. Maybe there are a few people who want to see them? The address is: http://home.t-online.de/home/neunobel...Juergen Neunobel (neunobel@sun.pop-nidda.de)
Your website is great! Good job on capturing the history and charm of our area. I have lived here almost all of my life. I married and moved to St. Louis. Recently, we purchased a home in Columbia, so I am "home" again and my husband feels at home too. Keep up the great work!...Dan and Lisa (Hopewell) Fallon (jamtym@htc.net)
Thanks for passing on your site address. I don't get back over to Columbia too often, so its nice to make a connection with someone from the hometown. Your site is very nicely done. I'll have to remember it the next time we're making travel arrangements...Eric Schneider (103615.13220@compuserve.com)
Just found your homepage and public service pages. I'm glad that there is something in Monroe County that points out Monroe County residents. I'd like permission to place a link to your page from mine. Also, I'd love it if you would add my email and homepage addreess on your page...Steve Bromley (bromley@intrnet.net)
